AUB Mediterraneo Deans
Dear members of the AUB community,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of three distinguished AUB professors who will serve as deans of the three faculties at our twin campus outside of Lebanon, the American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo) in Pafos, Cyprus. These accomplished leaders bring with them a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to academic excellence. They will play a key role in this groundbreaking venture, as we bring AUB’s transformative education, research, and service to a wider community.
Dr. Malek Tabbal has accepted the responsibility to serve as the first dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at AUB Mediterraneo. Under his leadership, the faculty will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivate a vibrant academic environment. A recipient of the AUB Teaching Excellence Award in 2004, Dr. Tabbal is professor of physics at AUB and has served as director of the Leadership, Equity, and Diversity (LEAD) Initiative (2018-21), director of the AUB USAID-University Scholarship Program (2011-19), associate dean of FAS (2009 and 2017), and chair of the Department of Physics (2004-05 and 2007-09). Currently professor of civil engineering and associate dean at the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at AUB, Dr. Sadek brings extensive administrative experience and an outstanding record of service to the university and his profession, in Lebanon and beyond. Under his leadership, the faculty will develop and advance innovative programs at AUB Mediterraneo. He was chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at AUB (2008-11) and a recipient of the 2005 AUB Teaching Excellence Award. The first dean of the School of Business at AUB Mediterraneo will be Dr. Alain Daou, currently associate professor of entrepreneurship at the Olayan School of Business (OSB) and director of the Nature Conservation Center at AUB. Dr. Daou's background in business education and social entrepreneurship will ensure the school's commitment to excellence and innovation.
