AUB Mediterraneo and Cyprus Mathematical Society Sign MoU to Advance Mathematics Education and Research

Paphos, Cyprus – February 25, 2025: The American University of Beirut Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo) and the Cyprus Mathematical Society (CMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in mathematics education, research, and scientific excellence. The agreement, signed today in Pafos, marks a significant step toward establishing Cyprus as a regional hub for mathematical and scientific advancement.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Wassim El Hajj, Rector of AUB Mediterraneo, and Dr. Gregory Makrides, President of the Cyprus Mathematical Society. Through this strategic partnership, both institutions commit to working together on a variety of initiatives that will enhance mathematical education, research, and academic collaboration.

One of the key objectives of this partnership is to improve and upgrade the mathematics curriculum in secondary schools, ensuring that students receive high-quality training that aligns with international standards. AUB Mediterraneo will also serve as a training base for top Cypriot students preparing for international mathematics competitions, providing them with the necessary resources and academic support to excel on a global stage.

As part of this collaboration, AUB Mediterraneo will award full Presidential Scholarships to the best-performing students at CMS competitions, enabling them to pursue their higher education at the university. Additionally, the two institutions will establish the AUB-CMS Excellence in STEM Award, which will recognize outstanding students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and innovative contributions in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Beyond student-focused initiatives, the partnership will foster academic exchanges and knowledge-sharing between faculty members and researchers from both institutions. AUB Mediterraneo and CMS will co-organize international mathematical conferences and research workshops in Cyprus, bringing together scholars and experts to engage in advanced training and discussions on emerging mathematical topics. Moreover, the two institutions will collaborate on joint research projects funded by the European Commission and other international research bodies, further contributing to the development of cutting-edge mathematical research.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Rector Wassim El Hajj emphasized the importance of this partnership to the university. “At AUB Mediterraneo, we are committed to academic excellence and the advancement of knowledge. This MoU reflects our shared vision with the Cyprus Mathematical Society to support young mathematicians, enhance research opportunities, and contribute to the global mathematical community.”

Dr. Gregory Makrides, President of CMS, highlighted the impact of the collaboration on mathematics education and professional development. “Through this partnership, we will not only recognize and support talented students but also create new opportunities for educators and researchers. Together, we aim to position Cyprus as a leading center for mathematical research and education in the region.”
