A Global Alumni Community

Graduates of AUB Mediterraneo become part of the global alumni community of the American University of Beirut, connecting them to more than 82,000 alumni living in over 135 countries.

Across generations, AUB alumni have made significant contributions to public service, healthcare, education, research, business, technology and community development. They include national leaders, diplomats, scholars, entrepreneurs and innovators whose work has shaped institutions and communities around the world.

AUB alumni have also played an important role in international affairs. Five alumni signed the United Nations Charter in 1945: Fadel Jamali for Iraq; Charles Malek for Lebanon; and Faris al-Khoury, Naim al-Antaki and Nazem al-Koudsi for Syria. More than 20 AUB alumni also participated in the San Francisco Conference that led to the establishment of the United Nations. Across generations, and wherever their paths take them, AUB and AUB Mediterraneo graduates carry forward the university’s enduring commitment to bringing people together “without distinction in regard to nationality or religion” to help build more just, inclusive, and equitable societies.

About WAAAUB and the WAAAUB Alumni Chapters

The Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB (WAAAUB) strengthens connections among the university and its alumni around the world. Through its international and professional chapters, WAAAUB creates opportunities for alumni to connect, collaborate, and support the university’s educational, research, and service mission. There are 67 alumni chapters and branches around the world: 26 in North America, 10 professional chapters, and 31 in the rest of the world.

About the Cyprus Chapter

Cyprus is home to a well-established and active community of AUB alumni, including many Cypriot nationals. Alumni have contributed to the country’s public and private sectors in fields including government, finance, education, healthcare, and business.

 Some of our prominent alumni in Cyprus are Eliza Markidou Ioannidou (BS Biology ’84), head of the Nutrition Department, Ministry of Health, Cyprus; Shadi Antoine Karam (BA Sociology ’70, MA Sociology ’72), Chairman, AstroBank; Soulla Christou Takkidou (BA Public Administration ’85), Chief Executive Officer, Department of Public Administration and Personnel, Ministry of Finance, Cyprus; and Ioannis M. Violaris (BA Economics ’78), Professor in Economics and Management, City Unity College, European University, Neapolis University, and Frederick University. Many of our alumni are members of the well-established and active alumni chapter.
