About the Faculty
The Faculty of Engineering at AUB Mediterraneo builds on more than a century of engineering excellence at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Located at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the Faculty brings regional and global perspectives to engineering education through close collaboration with AUB’s Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA).
Its undergraduate and graduate programs combine technical depth with the breadth of a liberal arts education. Through small classes, project-based learning, and close faculty mentorship from internationally active faculty, students develop specialized knowledge alongside the problem-solving, communication, leadership and collaborative skills required in modern engineering.
The Faculty prepares graduates for careers across sectors including technology, manufacturing, logistics, construction, consulting, and healthcare. As a growing faculty, it continues to develop programs that respond to emerging regional and global priorities, including sustainability and technological innovation.
Meet the Dean
Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering at AUB Mediterraneo. Our faculty extends the long tradition of engineering education at the American University of Beirut into a dynamic Mediterranean setting. Developed in close partnership with the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, our programs reflect the same academic rigor, commitment to innovation, and emphasis on socially responsible engineering that have defined AUB for generations.
Engineering today requires more than technical mastery. It calls for creativity, collaboration, and a deep awareness of the societal and environmental contexts in which technology operates. At AUB Mediterraneo, students engage with engineering as both a scientific discipline and a human endeavor, one that seeks practical solutions to complex global challenges.
Our faculty members include internationally trained engineers, researchers, and practitioners who bring expertise from industry, consulting, and academia. Many courses and initiatives are developed jointly with colleagues in Beirut, creating a unique cross-campus learning environment that connects students to a wider intellectual and professional network.
As we grow, we are expanding into new areas such as civil engineering and mechanical engineering programs, while maintaining a strong focus on interdisciplinary learning, employability, and innovation leadership. What makes engineering at AUB Mediterraneo different?
Our programs combine AUB’s internationally recognized engineering rigor with small-class teaching, cross-campus collaboration, and strong interdisciplinary integration and liberal arts education.
Why are engineering degrees offered as a Bachelor of Science (BS) and not a Bachelor of Engineering (BE)? Will this affect syndicate registration in Lebanon?
The BS format aligns with EU accreditation standards. For syndicate registration in Lebanon, a five-year academic track is required. Students may complete their BS at AUB Mediterraneo and then pursue an MS in Engineering Management or a related field. This combination fulfills the five-year requirement and strengthens their professional profile.
How do general education courses enhance my engineering education and future career?
General education courses strengthen your engineering foundation by deepening skills in science, math, and analytical thinking, while also broadening your perspective through humanities and social sciences. This interdisciplinary approach helps you tackle complex engineering challenges with creativity, critical reasoning, and effective communication. Employers consistently value engineers who can collaborate across fields, understand social and environmental contexts, and communicate complex ideas clearly.
What is Engineering Management (MEM)?
The MEM program combines engineering and management training, offering a fast-track pathway for engineers seeking leadership roles in project management, consulting, infrastructure, and technology-driven industries.
What are engineering classes like?
Classes combine lectures, guest speakers, labs, discussions, and team projects. Students gain hands-on experience, develop analytical skills, and learn to apply theory to real-world problems.
Are there opportunities for internships and practical training?
Yes. Students engage in summer internships, capstone projects, and industry partnerships. These experiences complement coursework and prepare students for professional engineering roles locally and internationally.
Can I pursue graduate studies after AUB Mediterraneo undergraduate programs?
Absolutely. Our programs provide a strong foundation for top-tier graduate programs in engineering, management, and STEM fields worldwide.
Will my degree be recognized internationally?
Yes. All American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo degrees follow international standards and support graduate study and employment worldwide. Engineering programs are accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, while accreditation by the New York State Education Department is currently in progress. Institutionally, the university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), supporting international recognition of its degrees.
Can I study for a term or more at AUB in Beirut and transfer my credits?
Yes. Students can spend up to one full year (two terms) at the AUB campus in Beirut, including summers, and credits and grades earned at AUB are fully transferable (up to 68 ECTS). All courses students transfer must correspond to their program of study and be approved by their adviser in advance.
Are students required to spend time at the AUB campus in Beirut?
Yes. All students must complete the Beirut Residency, a required non-credit component of the General Education Program. Students may fulfill the requirement through approved pathways such as coursework, internships, civic engagement activities, research visits, or one or two term at AUB.
Is the curriculum identical to the curriculum at AUB in Beirut?
AUB Mediterraneo programs follow AUB academic standards, governance structures, and quality assurance processes, with aligned learning outcomes across campuses. While the curriculum is closely coordinated and built in consultation with AUB faculty and leadership, it is not always identical. Some programs and courses are uniquely designed for AUB Mediterraneo to respond to regional needs, EU frameworks, and emerging fields. In many cases, courses have been adapted and enhanced to reflect our context while maintaining AUB’s academic rigor and international standards.
