Meet the Dean

Dr Alain Daou

Dean, Faculty of Business & Associate Professor of Management

Our faculty builds on the legacy of the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut, bringing world-class business education to the Mediterranean region. Today, the Faculty of Business at AUB Mediterraneo is among fewer than 2% of business schools worldwide to hold both AACSB and EQUIS accreditation, reflecting our commitment to the highest international standards of academic quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

At the core of our mission is a learning environment where students are challenged intellectually, supported personally, and prepared professionally.

One of our key strengths is our faculty. They are scholars and practitioners whose expertise spans management, strategy, finance, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. They lead internationally funded research projects, publish in top-tier journals, and remain deeply engaged with industry as consultants, advisors, and founders. Just as importantly, they are committed mentors who work closely with students on applied projects, capstones, and initiatives with real-world impact.

Together, we emphasize analytical thinking, ethical leadership, and interdisciplinary learning, empowering students to translate ideas into action and contribute meaningfully to their communities and careers. I invite you to explore our programs, meet our faculty, and discover how the Faculty of Business at AUB Mediterraneo can help shape your future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Faculty of Business classes like and what is the workload?

Classes combine theory and practice, including discussions, projects, case studies, and group work and help students develop problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills applicable across industries. For a 6 ECTS course, students should expect a combination of in-class time and 7–9 hours per week outside of class for reading, assignments, and projects. Faculty provide clear guidance to ensure expectations are manageable and aligned with learning goals.

Are there opportunities for experiential learning or internships?

Yes. Students engage in internships, consulting projects, capstones, and research under faculty mentorship, applying knowledge to real-world business challenges. For undergraduate students, this generally includes a formal 3 ECTS internship during the summer term before a student’s fourth year. For graduate students, there is also the option to complete a capstone project in close collaboration with industry partners, often leading to employment opportunities upon graduation.

How does the Faculty prepare students for careers?

Graduates develop transferable skills in leadership, analysis, strategy, and communication, enabling them to pursue careers in management, marketing, analytics, consulting, entrepreneurship, and beyond. Undergraduate students complete a required Strategic Career Planning Workshop and internship, helping them build professional skills and gain practical experience before graduation. In addition, students benefit from dedicated career support services, including career guidance, employer engagement opportunities, and resources to support their professional development and career readiness.

Can students pursue graduate studies or professional programs?

Yes. Our undergraduate programs equip students for advanced degrees in business, law, public policy, and specialized master’s programs including the MSBA.

What kind of advising is available? And how accessible are faculty members outside of class?

Students receive structured academic and career advising throughout their studies, including guidance on courses, majors, internships, and graduate study. Our faculty members maintain regular office hours and actively mentor students. Close faculty–student interaction is a defining feature of the learning experience at AUB Mediterraneo.

Will my degree be recognized internationally?

All AUB Mediterraneo business degrees follow international standards and are accredited by the New York State Education Department and the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education. Institutionally the university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), ensuring broad international recognition. The Faculty of Business also holds both AACSB and EQUIS accreditation, placing it among a select group of business schools worldwide to earn these internationally recognized distinctions. Together, these accreditations reflect the quality, rigor, and global relevance of our programs, supporting graduates in pursuing careers and further study around the world.

Can I study for a term or more at AUB in Beirut and transfer my credits?

Yes. Students can spend up to one full year (two terms) at the AUB campus in Beirut, including summers, and credits and grades earned at AUB are fully transferable (up to 68 ECTS). All courses students transfer must correspond to their program of study and be approved by their adviser in advance.

Are students required to spend time at the AUB campus in Beirut?

Yes. All students must complete the Beirut Residency, a required non-credit component of the General Education Program. Students may fulfill the requirement through approved pathways such as coursework, internships, civic engagement activities, research visits, or one or two term at AUB.

Is the curriculum identical to the curriculum at AUB in Beirut?

AUB Mediterraneo programs follow AUB academic standards, governance structures, and quality assurance processes, with aligned learning outcomes across campuses. While the curriculum is closely coordinated and built in consultation with AUB faculty and leadership, it is not always identical. Some programs and courses are uniquely designed for AUB Mediterraneo to respond to regional needs, EU frameworks, and emerging fields. In many cases, courses have been adapted and enhanced to reflect our context while maintaining AUB’s academic rigor and international standards.

Are there opportunities for other international exchanges or study abroad?

Yes. Students can broaden their academic and cultural experience through international mobility opportunities, including Erasmus+ and other exchange programs with partner institutions across Europe and beyond. These experiences allow students to study in different academic environments, develop global perspectives, and build international networks while remaining on track with their degree requirements. Students receive guidance and support throughout the exchange application and planning process.
